Synopsis

Based on an actual 1960s incident, Timothy Findley's play The Stillborn Lover was acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic in the early 1990s. Peter Moss (who had directed the stage versions) makes his screen debut with this faithful adaptation, which proves consistently intriguing, even though it never quite escapes its theatrical roots. Victor Garber impresses as ambassador Harry Raymond, who is recalled from Moscow to Canada following the murder of a Russian artist. But his wife Marianne (Louise Marleau) - the power behind his throne - soon emerges as the pivotal figure, as the truth about the activities of her husband and old friend Michael Riordan (Kenneth Welsh) is revealed during an investigation in a safe house in Ottawa.
