This is a film that tends to separate the girls from the boys, in that the former usually adore it and the latter nod off after 20 minutes. The great Tudor power play is laid out like a richly embroidered carpet with, in the blue corner, Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I and, in the red corner, Vanessa Redgrave as her deeply principled cousin Mary Stuart. In short, two of Britain's finest actresses shine in tailor-made roles. There are a few liberties taken with historical fact, but who cares? This is a splendid costume drama with the stars ably assisted by the likes of Ian Holm, Nigel Davenport and Trevor Howard. Wonderful stuff.
