Synopsis

Ice Cube replaces Vin Diesel for this second instalment in the thick-ear action franchise. Cube, the thinking man's Mr T, plays an imprisoned Special Ops soldier who's sprung by Samuel L Jackson's shadowy NSA agent to thwart Willem Dafoe's military coup against US President Peter Strauss. The plot blends Seven Days in May with a typical Bond film, say Die Another Day, which is coincidentally the work of xXx 2 director Lee Tamahori. It's not as good as either, despite one or two exciting set pieces, but it's entertaining enough for the video-game generation who'll doubtless relish the fact that the last 20 minutes look exactly like something out of a PlayStation shoot 'em up. And one can only pity poor Mr Diesel, who reportedly priced himself out of this follow-up and is here dismissed with a perfunctory "he died last night in Bora Bora".
