Synopsis
The early work of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman is very much an acquired taste, and this enigmatic contemplation on loneliness and obsessive desire is one of his most obscure passion plays. The third part of a trilogy with Through a Glass Darkly and Winter Light, it symbolically explores the bleak lives of two sisters as they embark on individual odysseys to find emotional warmth and tenderness. The overt sexuality caused censorship problems at the time, but now it's hard to see what all the fuss was about.
