Texas (1941) box art Here's a classy western from Columbia, teaming two matinidols (and drinking buddies) William Holden and Glenn Ford, competing for the love of Stagecoach's Claire Trevor. To be appreciated today it really needs colour, but it stems from the period when you didn't waste your budget if you had stars such as Ford and Holden who would attract an audience nevertheless. And without such films, the resonances Holden brought to The Wild Bunch or Ford to 3:10 to Yuma and The Fastest Gun Alive would be nonexistent, and cinema would be the poorer. George Marshall directs like a man who knows his territory, and turns out a satisfying and well-crafted movie.
