Synopsis

The Oscar-winning cinematographer of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Bound for Glory, and the director of the counterculture classic Medium Cool, Haskell Wexler has always expressed his views with passion and commitment. His son Mark, however, not only holds diametrically opposed political opinions, but he also sees his father as something of a parental disappointment and ultra-critical mentor. Here, Mark explores their somewhat fraught relationship. As in Nathaniel Kahn's My Architect, the blend of professional admiration and personal hurt makes for uncomfortable viewing, as grudges frequently seem to cloud judgement. The insights of the late cinematographer Conrad L Hall (American Beauty) and actress Jane Fonda into Hollywood dynasties are more objective. But there is something wincingly fascinating about watching an 80-year-old radical firebrand taking his photojournalist son to task, both for his conservatism and for his inability to emerge from his father's sizeable shadow.
