Synopsis

The final part of director Park Chan-wook's "vengeance" trilogy, which includes Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002) and Oldboy (2003), proves to be slightly disappointing when compared to its predecessors. Here, the focus switches to a female protagonist, as Lee Young-ae is released from prison after serving more than 13 years for the kidnap and murder of a young boy. Belying her angelic reputation, Lee has been systematically planning the downfall of ex-teacher Choi Min-sik, who implicated her in the heinous crime and allowed her own daughter to be given up for adoption. As the vengeful heroine Lee lacks psychological depth, and the lengthy Australian interlude is unnecessarily distracting. But while Park's stylish direction may be too self-conscious for some tastes, he does lace the action with plenty of macabre humour and his insinuation - rather than graphic depiction - of the violence makes it seem all the more pitiless.
