Synopsis

The idea of translating William Shakespeare's "Scottish play" to the Mafia underworld is a good one but this film, like its 1956 predecessor Joe Macbeth, fails to capitalise on the high concept. Indeed, Men of Respect has all the makings of a cult classic, as writer/director William Reilly's dialogue teeters between the clever and the unintentionally hysterical. As the hood who becomes head of the Mob by bumping off his rivals, John Turturro is occasionally very sinister, and Katherine Borowitz (as his wife) eggs him on with sadistic glee. But there are just too many sniggers for a tough crime drama.
