Synopsis

This unsung minor masterpiece influenced everything from the work of Jean-Luc Godard to Bonnie and Clyde and Natural Born Killers. A stylish film noir from director Joseph H Lewis, it's about a smouldering femme fatale (Peggy Cummins in the role of her life) who leads the psychotic, gun-fixated John Dall - one of the two young killers in Hitchcock's Rope - astray. Originally based on a Saturday Evening Post short story by MacKinlay Kantor, the taut screenplay is the work of Kantor and the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo (here credited as Millard Kaufman). The plot was reworked less effectively for 1992's Guncrazy, starring Drew Barrymore, which bizarrely removed the strong sexual undercurrent from the original and won a minor cult following.
