Synopsis

Cowboy Don Murray accidentally kills a man and is relentlessly pursued by RG Armstrong as the victim's vengeful father, hence this movie's more familiar UK title Manhunt. Don Murray's open, innocent face is perfect for this allegorical western, a personal parable penned by Wendell Mayes and producer Robert Buckner, and vividly directed by the experienced Henry Hathaway. The main interest today lies in the casting of Dennis Hopper, whose final confrontation with Murray is as taut as it is unpredictable, and Hathaway brilliantly frames the antagonists against the landscape. The love scenes between Murray and Diane Varsi are genuinely moving and the themes explored are ambitious and unsettling.
